Description The visual spectral comparator utilizes a variety of light sources (UV, Visible and NIR), illumination positions (coaxial, oblique, transmitted), and filters (excitation and barrier) to probe the absorption and reflectance characteristics of various documents. The packaging (secondary in most cases) and the different security elements of the packaging are examined with this instrument, the different elements observed are then compared with the same elements of an authentic product under the same conditions (or with photographs stored in a database).

Strengths Authentication of the different elements of the packaging;
non destructive;
Easy to use;
Fast answer;

Limitations Not portable;
Certain degree of expertise needed;
Cost of the apparatus;
Do not guarantee product integrity or tamper evidence: pack can be refilled and reused;
Need to have product references;
