N.B. Portable device available
Description Attenuated total reflectance (ATR) and Fourier-transformation infrared (FT-IR). Spectroscopy measures the interaction of matter and radiation, giving insight into chemical structure and contents. This apparatus gives an infrared spectrum of the product, this spectrum is then compared to database of reference spectra. The analysis of the spectrum can also allow a chemist to identify molecular functional groups. Most API and some organic excipients and impurities have characteristic spectral fingerprints that can be used to help identify them with reference spectra.
ATR and FT-IR does not require sample preparation, is non destructive, and provides information about the distribution of active ingredients and excipients on the surface of the tablets. It can also be used to analyze the surface of a packaging: carton, inside of the blister aluminum foil (analysis of the lacquer sealing).

Strengths Non-destructive;
Identification of the different constituents of a sample: provides information about the distribution of active ingredients and excipients on the surface of the tablets;
Can be used on packaging : carton, inside of the blister aluminum foil (analysis of the lacquer sealing);
No sample preparation;
Can be used for profiling;
Reference infrared spectrum for many common medicines available on the digital version of the international Pharmacopeia maintained by the WHO;

Limitations Cost;
Requires equipment + formation;
Not doable on liquid;
