Senegal : Panic buying: illicit COVID-19 treatments

Official data in Senegal has revealed that hydroxychloroquine cures COVID-19 patients more quickly. On May 6, the virus had infected 1,329 people and caused 11 deaths. But because it is so difficult to obtain treatment through the official healthcare system, an increasing number of Senegalese people are turning to the black market where medicine prices are three times the price, dealers hand out untrustworthy advice, and the products are expired or fake. Those who buy these products run the risks of the dangers of a parallel market where traceability and security regulations are non-existent. Several weeks ago, WHO warned of fake chloroquine treatments circulating in Africa which could “create serious side effects”.
