US Customs and Border Protection agents have seen an increase in unauthorized COVID-19 test kits across the country since the beginning of the pandemic. Officers in the Cincinnati area have made 62 seizures and confiscated 29,438 test kits. A total of 52 shipments are still awaiting FDA review. The kits had a domestic value of more than $500,000 and were either fake, not approved or prohibited by the FDA. “These criminals are smuggling and selling counterfeit safety equipment, unapproved testing kits, medicines, and hygiene products to individuals,” the agency said in a news release. Border protection officers are countering the problem by targeting both imports and exports that, mainly, are coming through international mail and express consignment cargo hubs.
