Kenya : Rivalry between regulatory pharmaceuticals agencies blamed for rise in fake medicines

Rivalry between the National Quality Control Laboratory (NQCL) and the Pharmacy and Poisons Board (PPB) for control of the lucrative business of making and importing pharmaceuticals is being blamed for the proliferation of substandard and counterfeit medicines on the market. The crisis was exposed after several cases went to courts. Sources have reported that cartels were forcing batches of medicines that have failed quality tests onto the market.
The importing companies are said to bribe Health Ministry agents to circumvent WHO standards for human medicines, medical devices and veterinary medicines.
