A Chinese court has sentenced nine illegal fentanyl traffickers following an investigation led by the Chinese and American authorities. One of the suspects received a suspended death sentence (death sentences are often commuted to life imprisonment after a suspended sentence) and two others were sentenced to life imprisonment. The other defendants were given shorter sentences – from six months to 10 years.

American president Donald Trump has repeatedly criticized Beijing’s alleged lenient attitude to this type of medicine trafficking and has decided to impose severe customs duties on Chinese products.
