Medicine shortages and increased medicine prices in Mexico are driving an increasing number of people to turn to parallel markets to buy all or some of their medicines. The health minister estimates that at least 78% of the population in Mexico resorts to self-medication. Of the illegal medicines sold in Mexico, 37.5% are sold online and 62.5% are sold at street markets or illegal premises selling products at prices between 60 and 80% lower than in pharmacies. The most sought-after medical products are those which are costly via mainstream channels: treatments for chronic degenerative diseases, cancer, diabetes, erectile dysfunction and cosmetics.
