Europe : One third of tooth whiteners fail to meet current regulations

The European Directorate on the Quality of Medicines and Healthcare (EDQM) tested 261 samples collected between 2013 and 2017, mainly bleaching toothpastes and whitening gels and also tray-based whiteners, whitening strips and paint-on whiteners. The overall level of compliance with regulations was 71% which means that nearly a third of all products failed testing. Reported irregularities included: higher than permitted levels of the bleaching agent hydrogen peroxide; and the presence of substances that could be carcinogenic, mutagenic or toxic for reproduction.
