The French Agency for the Safety of Health Products and Medicine (ANSM) has continued its actions against certain wholesaler-distributors in response to the challenges of stock shortages and the risk of fake medicines being introduced into the legal supply system. Inspections have revealed that there are wholesaler-distributors known as “short-liners” who shirk their legal duties. Short-liners are attracted by market profitability, especially though parallel imports. They buy cheaper medicines in France which they then resell in other European countries. This favors the introduction of fake medicine in the legal supply system, makes tracking more complicated and leads to the market drying up. In 2018, ANSAM issued five injunctions and five fines against these wholesaler-distributors, or “short-liners” for a total amount of €480,500.
