In 2016, officials seized more than 2000 boxes of medicine of dubious origin from Cuando Cubango pharmacies. The illicit products included antimalarial tablets, antibiotics, anticonvulsants, antiherpetics, contraceptives, biochemical reagents, anesthetics, anti-inflammatories, syrups and disposable material. Officials also filed 63 infractions during regional public and private hospital inspections. The crimes ranged from document fraud to illegal nursing positions and use of expired medicines. Health officials have announced tighter controls for 2017 and this will apply particularly to the origins of medicines.
