During a press interview on 26 December, the National Algerian Dispensing Pharmacists Syndicate (SNAPO) president, Messaoud Belambri, announced that from now on, there was a “risk of fully organized [fake medicine] trafficking and rings” in Algeria. Several doctors and pharmacists are amongst those identified as suspects. It is said that the latter do not hesitate in prescribing or marketing the smuggled medicines, also known as cabas (bags), which are illegally imported into the country. Messaoud Belambri is combatting this phenomenon by urging for stricter enforcement of regulations and continued coordinated action in the field from all players within the sector (health, commerce, customs, national security, police and professional health organizations).
