Indonesia: fight against illicit medicines trade to be reinforced following major seize at Jakarta East market

indonesieOn 1 September 2016, several thousand expired medicines were seized during a police operation at Pramuka market in East Jakarta city. The suspect, which was a pharmacy owner, was modifying the expiration dates. This trade generated more than $7000 per month. The Food and Drug Monitoring Agency (BPOM) has stated that it will crack down on illicit medicines trade in high-risk areas, especially in Pramuka Market. The BPOM also disclosed that this market was the supply source for vaccines, especially pediatric vaccines, found in hospitals and clinics.
